D.C. United’s Mohanad Jeahze was suspended by MLS after he was arrested in Stockholm on Saturday on two counts of assault.

Jeahze, the team’s starting left back, was on personal leave in his native Sweden while recovering from a quadriceps injury.

He has not been charged but is scheduled to remain in custody until May 8 while the investigation continues, said Susanne Ohbom, a senior public prosecutor.

Ohbom declined to provide details about the case. Court records indicate Jeahze was arrested in December and Saturday on allegations involving the same plaintiff.

He will remain in custody, according to records, because “there is a risk the suspect evades prosecution or punishment,” suppresses evidence and will “continue his criminal activities.”

“Jeahze has been suspended pending an investigation by Major League Soccer and Swedish authorities,” MLS said in a statement. “MLS will remain in close contact with D.C. United, the MLS Players Association and Swedish authorities during the investigation.”

The league and United will not comment further, MLS said.

Earlier, United said in a statement that it was aware of the situation and that Jeahze had received permission to travel to Sweden late last week after aggravating a leg injury against CF Montréal on April 15.

Jeahze’s agent, Blash Hosseini, did not respond to a request for comment.

Jeahze, 26, arrived in Washington this season after United paid Swedish club Hammarby a transfer fee of about $750,000. He is under contract through the 2025 season with a club option for 2026. He spent his first seven pro seasons in the Swedish league.

Jeahze has appeared in six D.C. matches; he started five and recorded two assists. His quadriceps injury was expected to sideline him for at least three weeks.

In Jeahze’s absence for three games this spring, United used homegrown Jacob Greene or veteran Pedro Santos. During a 3-1 victory at Orlando City on Saturday, Coach Wayne Rooney opted to play without a true left back and used Santos as a wing back.

Jeahze has been a member of the Iraqi national team since 2021 and has started three World Cup qualifiers.
